Derren wurde 1971 in Croydon geboren. Es war eine schwierige Geburt - seine Mutter war zu der Zeit in Devon. Er war ein frühreifes und rätselhaftes Einzelkind, das gerne malte, zwanghafte Angewohnheiten pflegte und einmal versehentlich das Boot eines Nachbarn in Brand setzte.
Derren studierte später Jura und Deutsch an der Universität Bristol und verliebte sich in die Stadt. Es war eine Zeit, in der die Ehe zwischen Mann und Stadt noch verpönt war. Um sich nicht dem Spott der Öffentlichkeit auszusetzen, beschloss Derren, einfach für immer dort zu leben.
In dieser Zeit begann er, in Bars und Restaurants zu zaubern und gelegentlich Hypnoseshows zu geben. 1999 wurde er von Channel 4 gebeten, ein Programm zum Gedankenlesen für das Fernsehen zusammenzustellen, das zu Derren Brown: Mind Control. Es folgten Mind Controls 2 und 3. Im Oktober 2003 sorgte Derren für internationales Aufsehen, als er live im Fernsehen Russisches Roulette spielte. Das machte ihn in der Öffentlichkeit bekannt und verschaffte ihm eine große Wohnung in London.
Es folgten weitere Sondersendungen - Derren Brown: The Seance war die meistbeanstandete Sendung in der Geschichte des Fernsehens. Noch immer erhält er jede Woche mehrere Beschwerdebriefe von Hellsehern und Christen. Er ist sensibel für die Einwände aller, weiß aber, dass ihm zumindest die letztere Gruppe verzeihen wird.
